Local Junior Golfers To Play In Jerry Pate-Andrews Institute Southern Junior Golf Tournament

 

Nation’s best will play at Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, FL

BRASELTON, GA and GULF BREEZE, FL (July 20, 2007) – For the second consecutive year, Jerry Pate, Andrews Institute and the American Junior Golf Association will combine efforts to bring the best junior golfers in the country to Pensacola, Fla., for the Jerry Pate/Andrews Institute Southern Junior July 23-26. The 54-hole event will be played at Pensacola Country Club and feature a field of 84 boy and girl junior golfers ages 12-18.

Thirty-six players in the field hail from the Sunshine state, including seven from the Pensacola area. The local juniors who will test themselves against players from as far away as California include Darren Chapman (Fort Walton Beach H.S.), Joey Fontenot (St. Paul’s Episcopal School), Grant McCormick (Gulf Breeze, H.S.), Blake Olson (Pensacola Catholic H.S.), Bobby Wyatt (UMS-Wright H.S.), Ana Garcia (Niceville, H.S.) and Haley Millsap (Pace H.S.).

The highest ranked player in the Girls Division is local Haley Millsap of Pace, Fla. Millsap started the 2007 season on a high note, finishing in the top-10 in her first two tournaments (first at the AJGA National Qualifier and seventh at the SAP Junior Open).

In the Boys Division, Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala. will look for his first AJGA title. Wyatt has four top-10 finishes in AJGA events including third-place at the 2007 Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan. Local player Blake Olson of Pensacola, Fla., is a relative newcomer to the AJGA, but has placed in the top-five at all three tournaments he has played so far in 2007. His best finish came at the Junior All-Star at PGA National where he placed second. A recent high school graduate, Darren Chapman of Destin, Fla., has played in AJGA events since 2004 and will go on to play golf for the University of Southern Mississippi.

The tournament practice round will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Monday, July 23. The first and second rounds will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, July 24 and 25. The final round will take place Thursday, July 26. Tee times will run from 8 - 9:57 a.m. off the Nos. 1&10 tees all three days. The awards ceremony will take place immediately following the final round.
